EDITOR’S NOTE: This message was shared with the UT Health San Antonio and UTSA communities by UT Health San Antonio Acting President Robert Hromas, MD, FACP, and UTSA President Taylor Eighmy.
Today marks an exceptional milestone for our community as we unveil an ambitious and visionary journey toward establishing a world-class university for San Antonio. This endeavor will elevate our city to the forefront of excellence in education, discovery, biomedical science, health care and digital technology.
The UT System Board of Regents has asked Chancellor Milliken to work with us to develop a plan to merge UTSA and UT Health San Antonio to create a premier university that brings all of our individual academic, research and clinical strengths together to build a unified and profoundly impactful university of the future.
With each university on a rapid upward trajectory, now is the time to harness this respective momentum and unite our complementary strengths to immediately and immensely benefit the communities we serve. By merging, we will amplify our successes, expand to prepare and meet the growing demands of our region, and offer the most comprehensive services of any university in the entire state of Texas.
Together, we will be more effectively positioned and more competitive among the nation’s leading research universities to transform lives through improved education, research, health care and innovation. Both individual institutions are keenly focused on excellence—in academics, research, health care and community engagement—and once integrated, that excellence will be amplified significantly.
We recognize that with this great excitement there may also come anticipation, and we look forward to sharing more details about the forthcoming merger’s timelines, process and input opportunities for faculty, staff, health providers/clinicians and students. Please know you each play a critical role in the success of building the future of this new university, and we will engage regularly to listen to your voices and implement your ideas throughout the process.
Great cities are inextricably linked to great universities, a truth that resonates profoundly today. We stand at the precipice of an extraordinary opportunity—one that invites us to create something transcendent, something beyond our individual capacities. United in this endeavor, we are confident that we will not only meet, but surpass, our potential to address and fulfill the needs of San Antonio, our region, state and nation.
